How I Made My First Copper Wire Jewellery Ear Wires

My new tools and materials arrived a few days ago. I purchased them from Cookson Gold, who were super quick at getting these things out to me, despite the current UK Covid lockdown! My children went to bed at a sensible time, leaving me for a couple of precious hours to myself. So I settled …

Impatiently Waiting to Get Started with Jewellery Making, Again…

I’m writing tonight, with both of my kids tucked away in bed at 8.30pm, ready to start a new jewellery making project… except I’m still waiting for the materials I need to get started on a wire wrapping project to arrive. *Drums fingers impatiently*. I still have three more days to wait… Occupying Myself While …

Another Attempt at Resurrecting My Old Passion for Jewellery Craft

9th January 2021… I kind of missed the New Year’s resolution boat… but I’m making another attempt at resurrecting my old passion for jewellery craft. Looking at my last post date, it’s been about 3 years since I thought I was going to restart my blog again. I have no excuses… time got away from …

Back Again… Reviving an Old Passion for Craft

So… deep breath… With the encouragement of my husband, I’ve decided to revive my old passion for craft. And also the blog that went alongside that passion, after 3-4 years of silence. What can I say? Two young children and a job pose enough day-to-day challenges. I haven’t even thought about, let alone made any, …

A Last Silver Jewellery Class… Blame the Baby!

Wow, I’ve just looked at the last time I wrote in my blog, and around 18 months. I only really have one excuse – I was busy having a baby. It’s amazing how much time these little ones take up! But I haven’t been completely quiet on the jewellery front. In particular, I decided to do …

Ecstatic! Finished the First Piece of My New Jewellery Collection

I’m feeling ecstatic, today, as I’ve just finished the first piece of my jewellery collection. If you’re interested in how I made the pendant, take a look at my earlier post on this topic: Starting Out with My Very Own Jewellery Collection. It didn’t quite go as planned, admittedly – I wanted to add twisted …

The Importance of Having the Right Tools

It sounds so obvious… But this week, I realised the importance of having the right tools. I have been making jump rings for my necklace, by hand, out of silver wire. And not doing too badly I might add, but terribly slow!

Now my hands are raw and painful from making 120 of these little rings! I realised now, more than ever, what a good pair of pliers would mean. A softer handle, better fitting in my hand would probably mean I could hold them for longer without my hand going red. And a less stiff spring or any kind of spring probably means I don’t have to hold the pliers quite so tight.

Well at least I worked it out after 100 or so jump rings. I think it might be time to shop for some new pliers… Off to the shops with me!

Starting Out with My Very Own Jewellery Collection

To give myself a bit more structure, I’ve decided to start building a jewellery collection, using geometry for inspiration. I’ve actually been working on it for a little while – I travel a lot for work, so it’s the perfect time to get the sketchbook out and put some ideas on paper. Some are completely …

Making a Simple Silver Ring – Going Back to Basics

My sister asked me to make her a new ring – very simple silver ring band. One solder join, no complications. Sounds like a nice easy way to get back into making jewellery, after my last disheartening disaster into mokume gane! I guess I should have learned to walk before trying to run! And it …

Experimenting with Mokume Gane – A First (Disastrous!) Attempt

Well… it’s the first day that I’ve been home since the Christmas holidays. I’m feeling very excited and raring to go! I’ve spent some time designing a 12 piece collection and pricing up the items, mainly out of curiosity. I’m not sure whether I’m capable of making all the pieces, as I let my imagination …
