Ecstatic! Finished the First Piece of My New Jewellery Collection

I’m feeling ecstatic, today, as I’ve just finished the first piece of my jewellery collection. If you’re interested in how I made the pendant, take a look at my earlier post on this topic: Starting Out with My Very Own Jewellery Collection. It didn’t quite go as planned, admittedly – I wanted to add twisted chain links. Unfortunately, I started with jump rings that were too small, and so by the time I added the twist, I couldn’t actually get the 0.8mm round wire through the hole!!! Oops! Check out the mess, I made:

I resorted to using the rest of the jump rings to make a simple chain. Overall, I’m pretty happy with it – I even submitted a photo to Cookson Gold and London Jewellery School to see what sort of reaction I get from their followers.  As silly as I am, I’m happy I got 6 Facebook “likes”! In fact, I’m pretty excited, actually! So, here it is, the finished piece:

      Hello,

Thanks for your enquiry. This necklace would be priced at £75 for the whole thing, including pendant, plus postage and packaging on top.

      Kind Regards,

I think its very good looking. Did you also make the pendant? Im just learning(about 8 months) myself. my biggest challenge is hard soldering. I can do it now but usually not on the first try. Ive made some stack rings so far and repaired some chains/bracelets and rings. ive put some nice prong setting rings together with my gemstones, i bought the semi mount rings.lol,,Thats what inspired me to make my own from scrap. It all started with collecting Gemstones and Minerals, i love my Gems.I dont know if im saving any money though and that was the major purpose of doing it. Did you make things with bought settings to start or just dove straight in ?

      Hi!

Thank you for taking time to read my blog and writing me a comment!

Keep persevering with the hard solder – I think it can take time to master! There is a wonderful, supportive Facebook group called “Jewellers Academy” which I’m a member of – definitely worth joining to get inspiration and hints and tips from other jewellers!

In my enthusiasm to learn, I just dove straight in. Everything you see on the site was made by me (several years ago now… to my shame…). I learnt to do the ring settings from books and YouTube videos. But there are some great online courses available now!

I haven’t written on my blog for a really long time, and I’m really surprised (and happy!) that you found it and took time to write me a comment. I’ve spent a few years parenting my kids (who knew kids took up so much time??), but your comments this morning have inspired me to restart my journey! My husband has offered to set my workshop up for me in our garden shed (hehe… I wonder how cold that’s going to be??) and I’m looking forward to sharing my continued learning journey on here! Please do check in with me again, and I’d love to see your designs!

Do! Although it’s probably cheaper to buy your jump rings / chain ready-made, there is a real satisfaction knowing that you made everything yourself, and will give you lots of practice to not melt the links! Good luck!
