If you’ve ever wondered how to measure and make a simple ring, then you’re in luck! After my recent class at London Jewellery School, I thought I’d jot down the key steps to measure a ring. It works fairly well – you just have to be careful when filing the ends flat to join with solder, so that you don’t take too much out. You can stretch the ring a little if it’s too short, but so far I’ve found that quite hard and it doesn’t stretch a whole ring size (or at least, I haven’t managed to)!
1. Use a ring sizer to measure your finger and then measure the diameter across the inside of the ring (measuring a ring that already fits would also work!). The diameter is the length across the centre of the ring from one side to the other. I tend to measure in millimetres.
2. Measure the thickness of the wire (again, in millimetres).
3. Add together the first and second measurements, then multiply the whole lot by pi (around 3.14159). This is the length of metal that needs to be measured out.
