Using 28g copper wire, and a 2mm crochet needle, I tried to make a 3D copper flower. I'll be honest, it didn't come out the way I expected! It's definitely harder to get the right gauge with wire than yarn, so this flower came out a lot bigger than I had expected. ~ Learning & Making Jewellery Together ~ Happy International Women's Day! My daughter belongs to an amazing Brownies group, along with three other girls. They have a great time every week, learning about different crafts and life skills. Well, this term, they've been learning about jewellery - different kinds of jewellery, jewellery from different cultures and most importantly, how you make it! Over the past few weeks, they've been at the workshop learning to make copper rings! They are so inspiring and I'm so proud of them all - none of them have ever done metal smithing before. In a few supervised sessions, they have managed to anneal their copper, texture it, solder the join and shape the ring on a mandrel! (I've done some preparation and tidy up, here and there!). It turned out it was super easy, and only requires use of your kitchen oven (no need for a torch or kiln!)... my first attempt wasn't perfect, but it was fun! I still dread changing my jeweller’s saw blade! So I always run through some checks to make sure I’ve done it right: - Are the teeth on the blade pointing out of the frame? - If I run my finger along the blade, do the teeth cut on the down stroke? - Does the blade have the right tension? E.g. does it ping?! And to achieve the right tension, I lean the top of the blade against the bench and put all my weight behind the handle when I tighten the bottom screw. I don’t know if there are better ways of doing this, but it works for me!
~ Learning & Making Jewellery Together ~ I recently tried silver metal clay for the first time. Since I don't own a kiln, I opted to fire the clay with my butane torch. And of course, I didn't do nearly enough research into how to fire the clay properly and melted my piece. So I thought I'd show you how wrong I got it, so that perhaps you can avoid making the same mistakes as me.
